# Kosh vs Groww and Zerodha: planning vs investing

Groww and Zerodha are where you buy stocks and mutual funds. Kosh is an AI CFO that helps you decide how much to invest and why. Kosh doesn't execute trades, hold your money or recommend securities, so the two are complementary.

## Is Kosh an AI investment advisor?

No, and it's worth being plain about it. In India, recommending specific securities to you is regulated investment advice, which needs [SEBI](https://www.sebi.gov.in/) registration. Kosh is not registered. It is an educational planning tool: it explains categories such as index funds, liquid funds and PPF, and does the maths for your goals. It never tells you which fund or stock to buy. It also can't execute trades or hold your money. That's the broker's job.

## What Groww and Zerodha are built for

Both are SEBI-registered stock brokers and depository participants. They open your demat account and execute your orders.

- **Groww.** Its [pricing page](https://groww.in/pricing) lists free account opening, INR 0 maintenance, direct mutual funds at zero charges and equity brokerage of INR 20 or 0.1% per order, whichever is lower (minimum INR 5). It also offers IPOs, ETFs, US stocks, bonds, margin trading and loans. It is registered with SEBI as a broker (INZ000301838) and with AMFI as a mutual fund distributor, and says it doesn't advise on or recommend stocks or funds.
- **Zerodha.** Its [charges page](https://zerodha.com/charges/) lists INR 0 brokerage on equity delivery and direct mutual funds, and INR 20 or 0.03% per order, whichever is lower, on intraday and futures. Its [about page](https://zerodha.com/about/) says it doesn't give stock tips. Kite is its trading platform and Coin its mutual fund platform.

Statutory charges such as STT, stamp duty and GST apply on top at any broker.

## What Kosh is built for

A broker answers "how do I buy this?". Kosh answers the questions that come before and after:

1. **How much can I invest?** Kosh reads your bank and card statements and shows what's left after rent, EMIs, insurance and an [emergency fund](/learn/how-much-emergency-fund-do-i-need).
2. **How much does each goal need?** Retirement, a home, a child's education: each becomes a monthly SIP amount.
3. **What will the tax be?** Your income tax under both regimes, plus how capital gains on your funds and shares are taxed. See the [capital gains guide](/learn/capital-gains-tax-on-shares-and-mutual-funds).
4. **What's due?** Reminders before SIPs, card due dates and tax deadlines such as [advance tax](/learn/advance-tax-guide).

Kosh reads your CAMS or NSDL CAS, so it sees your funds and demat holdings across brokers without any broker login.

## How each one earns money

Kosh earns only from subscriptions and takes no commissions from banks, fund houses, brokers or insurers. Brokers earn brokerage and charges on orders as set out on their pricing pages, and some, such as Groww, also offer margin trading and loans. Direct mutual funds carry no distributor commission on either platform.

## Before you open the broker app

A common order of operations, which Kosh helps you check against your own numbers:

1. Keep an emergency fund of a few months' expenses somewhere you can reach quickly. The [emergency fund calculator](/tools/emergency-fund-calculator) gives a starting figure.
2. Clear high-interest debt, such as a credit card balance carried forward, before investing for the long term.
3. Get [term cover](/learn/how-much-term-insurance-do-i-need) if anyone depends on your income, and health cover for the family.
4. Name your goals, give each a date, and work out the monthly amount for each.
5. Then invest those amounts through the broker or platform you prefer.

## Why they're complementary

You'll still need a broker to invest, whether that's Groww, Zerodha or another. Kosh sits above it: deciding how much, for what, and with what tax effect, then reminding you to follow through. Keep investing where you do, and use Kosh to plan the rest.

Can I buy stocks or mutual funds through Kosh?

No. Kosh cannot execute trades, hold money or move money. You invest through a SEBI-registered broker or platform such as Groww or Zerodha, and Kosh helps you plan around those investments.

Do Groww and Zerodha recommend stocks?

From a SEBI-registered investment adviser, who can recommend specific securities under SEBI's rules on fees and conflicts. You can check any adviser's registration on SEBI's website.
