**In short**

- Monarch connects to your financial accounts to track spending, budgets and balances in one place. If you want an automatically updated dashboard, it's a solid option.
- Kosh doesn't connect to your bank. It reads the statements you upload, then maps your money, estimates your federal and provincial tax and plans RRSP, TFSA and FHSA contributions.
- As of 31 October 2026, Monarch lists US$14.99 a month or US$99.99 a year, billed in US dollars. Kosh Pro is CA$19 a month or CA$179 a year, and Starter is free.
- Pick Monarch for a connected, always-current dashboard. Pick Kosh if you want Canadian tax and savings planning without sharing bank logins.

## How each one works

Monarch Money pulls your accounts into one dashboard so you can see balances, spending and budgets without typing anything in. Its Canada page suggests using the trial to confirm your institutions connect reliably, which is good advice for any connected app: coverage of Canadian banks and credit unions varies.

Kosh takes a different route. You upload statements from your bank, cards and investment accounts. Kosh sorts every transaction, finds what you could cut, estimates your tax for your province and turns it into a short list of next steps: pay down this card, top up that TFSA, move idle cash out of a chequing account that pays nothing. It's an [AI CFO](/learn/what-is-an-ai-cfo), not a dashboard.

## Where Monarch is the better choice

- **You want it to update itself.** Once your accounts connect, Monarch stays current without uploads.
- **You like a dashboard.** If you want to see every balance and budget at a glance whenever you open an app, a connected tracker suits that.
- **You're comfortable linking accounts** and your banks connect reliably.

## Where Kosh is the better choice

- **You don't want to share bank logins.** Kosh never asks for them and can't move money. Read our [security page](/legal/security).
- **You want Canadian tax answers.** Kosh works out your marginal rate, what an RRSP or FHSA contribution saves and how RSUs or a side business change your bill. See [Canadian tax brackets for 2026](/learn/canadian-tax-brackets-2026).
- **You want to be told what to do next,** not just shown charts.
- **You'd rather pay in Canadian dollars.** Monarch bills in US dollars, so the cost moves with the exchange rate.

## What each costs

As of 31 October 2026, Monarch's pricing page lists US$14.99 a month or US$99.99 a year, and its Canada page says all prices are billed in US dollars. Its Canada page also mentions a 7-day trial; check the current offer before signing up.

Kosh Starter is free. Kosh Pro is CA$19 a month or CA$179 a year, with a 7-day free trial.

## A sensible way to choose

1. **Decide what you want the app to do.** Watch balances, or tell you what to change?
2. **Check data access.** If linking accounts bothers you, that settles it. If not, try a connected app and confirm your banks work.
3. **Check the tax side.** If your situation includes RSUs, self-employment income, an FHSA or a big RRSP decision, you'll want something that handles Canadian tax.

**Where Kosh fits**

Kosh is for people who want a plan, not just a picture. It reads statements you upload, estimates your Canadian tax and puts your registered-account room to work, without bank logins.
