Kosh for founders and small business owners

# Personal finance for founders and business owners

When the business is your income, your own money gets whatever is left. Kosh reads your personal and business bank statements and shows what you actually take home, spend and owe.

## What gets in the way

### Business and personal in one account

Supplier payments, GST, school fees and Swiggy orders all run through the same current account. Nobody can tell what you really earn or spend.

### Drawings with no plan

You take money out when the business has it. Some months that's INR 3 lakh, some months nothing, and household spending doesn't adjust either way.

### Advance tax by guesswork

Under the presumptive scheme it's all due by 15 March; otherwise in four instalments. Profit is unclear until year end, so it's often paid late with interest.

### No safety net of your own

No EPF, no gratuity, no group health cover. The business is the retirement plan, which is a lot of risk in one place.

### Personal guarantees on business loans

Your home or savings may be backing the working-capital limit. If the business stumbles, the household takes the hit.

## What Kosh does about it

### Draws a line between you and the business

Upload current and savings account statements. Kosh sorts every transaction so drawings, household spending and personal investments stand apart from business flows.

### Shows your real personal cash flow

What you took out each month, what the household spent and what was left, mapped across income, spending, debt and savings.

### Keeps the deadlines

Email reminders before advance-tax dates, the return deadline, card dues, SIPs and insurance renewals.

### Builds the safety net

Emergency fund, retirement and children's education turned into monthly SIP amounts you can fund from steady drawings.

### Answers in your numbers

Ask the chat CFO what you drew from the business last year or how much the household needs a month, and get a figure from your statements.

## Pay yourself like an employee

The single most useful habit is a fixed monthly transfer from the business to a personal account, the same amount every month. Household spending, SIPs and EMIs run from that account only. In good months the surplus stays in the business or goes to a buffer; in lean months the buffer tops up the transfer. Size the household number with the [budget planner](/tools/budget-planner), then hold six to twelve months of it in an [emergency fund](/tools/emergency-fund-calculator), more than a salaried person needs, because business income can stop without notice.

## Tax basics for owners

- **Presumptive scheme (44AD, now within section 58).** Eligible resident individuals, HUFs and partnership firms declare at least 6% of digital receipts and 8% of cash receipts as profit, for turnover up to INR 2 crore, or INR 3 crore if cash receipts are no more than 5% of the total. All advance tax is due by 15 March. The [presumptive tax calculator](/tools/presumptive-tax-calculator) works it out.
- **Return dates.** Business owners filing ITR-3 or ITR-4 without an audit file by 31 August; if the business needs a tax audit, by 31 October. A revised return can be filed up to 31 March.
- **Company founders.** A salary from your private limited company is taxed as salary, with the INR 75,000 standard deduction in the new regime. Dividends are taxed at your slab rate, with 10% TDS above INR 10,000 a year. The [dividend tax calculator](/tools/dividend-tax-calculator) compares.
- **GST.** Registration is required above INR 40 lakh of turnover for most suppliers of goods and INR 20 lakh for services, lower in special-category states. The [GST calculator](/tools/gst-calculator) helps with pricing.
- **ESOPs.** For startup founders and early employees, exercise is taxed as salary and sale as capital gains. See the [ESOP tax calculator](/tools/esop-tax-calculator).

## Build what an employer would have given you

Without EPF, you build retirement yourself: PPF, NPS and equity SIPs are the usual building blocks, and the [retirement calculator](/tools/retirement-calculator) gives a target. Buy family health cover in your own name, and size term insurance to cover any loan you've personally guaranteed, so the household isn't left holding it.

Then diversify away from the business. Your income, your largest asset and often your home loan guarantee all depend on one company. Money you invest personally should sit somewhere the business can't reach: not in its current account, not lent back to it on a handshake, and not pledged against its working-capital limit. Track it with the [net worth calculator](/tools/net-worth-calculator), once with the business at book value and once with it at zero. The second figure is what your family can count on.

**Where Kosh stops**

Kosh is personal finance, not accounting software. It doesn't keep books, file GST or income tax returns, or handle audits. Use it alongside your accountant, not instead of one.

## Frequently asked questions

How should a business owner manage personal finances?

Keep a separate personal account and pay yourself a fixed monthly amount from the business. Run household spending, SIPs and EMIs from that account only, and hold six to twelve months of expenses as a personal emergency fund.

What is the turnover limit for presumptive tax under 44AD?

INR 2 crore, or INR 3 crore if cash receipts during the year are no more than 5% of the total. Profit is declared at 6% of digital receipts and 8% of cash receipts, and all advance tax is due by 15 March.

Can Kosh read current account statements?

Yes. Kosh reads statements from any Indian bank as PDF, CSV or photo, savings or current. It sorts every transaction so you can see business flows, drawings and household spending separately.

Is Kosh a replacement for my accountant?

No. Kosh does not keep books, file GST or income tax returns, or handle audits and notices. It covers your personal side: cash flow, tax planning, goals and reminders.
