Kosh for freelancers and consultants

# An AI CFO for freelancers and consultants

No employer deducts your tax, tracks your PF or tells you what you earned this quarter. Kosh reads your bank statements and does that part of the job, so lumpy income turns into a plan.

## What gets in the way

### TDS that doesn't show up

Indian clients deduct 10% under section 194J, but a wrong PAN or a late TDS return means it never reaches your Form 26AS. You only find out when you file and the credit is missing.

### The 15 March cliff

Under 44ADA the whole year's advance tax is due by 15 March. Foreign clients deduct nothing, so a good year can end with a six-figure bill you didn't set aside for.

### Three great months, then two empty ones

Irregular income makes a monthly budget feel pointless. You overspend in the fat months and dip into savings in the thin ones.

### One account for everything

Client receipts, refunds, transfers from your own savings and personal UPI all sit in one statement. Working out actual income for the year takes a weekend.

### The GST question

Registration is needed once turnover crosses INR 20 lakh, and export receipts count towards it. Many freelancers cross the line without noticing.

## What Kosh does about it

### Separates income from noise

Kosh sorts every transaction, so client receipts stand apart from refunds, self-transfers and personal spending, month by month.

### Shows income the way it really arrives

See which months carried the year, what your average month looks like and how much your fixed costs eat into a thin one.

### Reminds before advance tax

Email reminders before each advance-tax date and the 31 August return deadline, so 15 March is never a surprise.

### Plans a bigger buffer

Goals and an emergency fund sized for irregular income, each turned into a monthly SIP amount you can keep in a lean month.

### Answers questions about your year

Ask the chat CFO how much clients paid you this quarter or what you spent on software, and it answers from your statements.

## How freelancers are taxed, in one example

Most freelancers can use the presumptive scheme long known as **section 44ADA**, now part of section 58 of the Income-tax Act, 2025. You declare **50% of gross receipts** as profit and pay tax on that at slab rates, with no books of account. The limit is INR 50 lakh of receipts, or INR 75 lakh if no more than 5% comes in cash. There's no standard deduction, because you aren't salaried.

If you bill INR 30 lakh in FY 2026-27 with no other income, your taxable income is INR 15 lakh and tax in the new regime is INR 1,09,200. Bill INR 24 lakh or less and your deemed income stays within INR 12 lakh, so the rebate takes your tax to nil. If your real expenses are more than half your receipts, you can declare actual profit instead, but then you need books and possibly an audit. The [freelancer tax calculator](/tools/freelancer-tax-calculator) compares both.

## Advance tax and TDS

Anyone whose tax for the year is over INR 10,000 after TDS pays advance tax. Under 44ADA it's a single instalment by **15 March**; if you declare actual profit you pay 15%, 45%, 75% and 100% by 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March. Miss them and interest under 234B and 234C adds up; the [interest calculator](/tools/income-tax-interest-calculator) shows how much.

TDS your Indian clients cut is credited against that bill, but only if it appears in your Form 26AS. Check 26AS every quarter, not just before you file, and chase clients whose deductions are missing. The [advance tax guide](/learn/advance-tax-guide) walks through the dates.

From Budget 2026, freelancers filing ITR-3 or ITR-4 without a tax audit have until **31 August** to file, a month after salaried people. If your accounts need an audit, the date is 31 October. A revised return can be filed up to 31 March.

### GST, briefly

GST registration is required once your aggregate turnover crosses **INR 20 lakh** in a year (INR 10 lakh in special-category states), and receipts from foreign clients count towards it. Exports of services are zero-rated: with a letter of undertaking you charge no GST to clients abroad, but you still register and file once you cross the limit. Indian clients pay 18% on top of your fee, which you collect and pass on. Keep GST money out of your spending account; it was never yours. The [GST for freelancers guide](/learn/gst-for-freelancers) and the [GST invoice generator](/tools/gst-invoice-generator) cover the mechanics.

## A money system for irregular income

1. **Pay yourself a salary.** Keep receipts in one account and move a fixed amount to a spending account each month.
2. **Set aside tax as it comes in.** A fixed share of every receipt goes to a separate account until 15 March.
3. **Hold a bigger buffer.** Six months of expenses, not three, because there's no notice period when a client leaves. The [emergency fund calculator](/tools/emergency-fund-calculator) sizes it.
4. **Replace what an employer would give.** No EPF and no group health cover, so plan your own retirement saving and health insurance.

## Frequently asked questions

Which finance app is good for freelancers in India?

One that understands irregular income, separates client receipts from personal transfers and reminds you before advance-tax dates. Kosh does this from your uploaded bank statements, without bank logins, and it cannot move your money.

How much tax does a freelancer pay under 44ADA?

Under 44ADA, half your gross receipts is treated as profit and taxed at slab rates. In the new regime for FY 2026-27, receipts of INR 30 lakh mean INR 15 lakh of taxable income and INR 1,09,200 of tax, if you have no other income. Receipts up to INR 24 lakh mean nil tax after the rebate.

When do freelancers pay advance tax?

If you use 44ADA, the whole year's advance tax is due by 15 March. If you declare actual profit instead, it's paid in four instalments by 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March. It applies when your tax after TDS is over INR 10,000.

What is the ITR due date for freelancers?

From Budget 2026, freelancers and consultants filing ITR-3 or ITR-4 without a tax audit file by 31 August, a month later than salaried people on ITR-1 or ITR-2. If a tax audit applies, the due date is 31 October. A revised return can be filed up to 31 March.

Does Kosh file GST or income tax returns for freelancers?

No. Kosh is a planning tool, not a CA or accounting software. It shows your income, spending and tax deadlines from your statements; you or your CA file GST and income tax returns.

Can Kosh read statements from more than one bank?

Yes. Kosh reads statements from any Indian bank as PDF, CSV or photo, and overlapping statements merge without double counting. That helps when client money lands in one account and spending happens in another.
