# What is an AI CFO, and do you need one?

A company's CFO watches every rupee, plans ahead and warns before trouble. An AI CFO does the same job for one person or household, using your own statements instead of a finance team. Here's what that means in practice, and where its limits are.

## The short answer

An AI CFO is software that reads your financial documents (bank statements, credit card statements, salary slips, mutual fund statements), builds a picture of your money from them, and then keeps working on it: spotting leaks, estimating tax, planning toward goals and reminding you before things are due. The word that matters is **ongoing**. A calculator answers one question when you ask. A CFO keeps asking the questions for you.

In India that job has a specific shape. Most people's money runs through UPI, a salary account, one or two credit cards, EMIs, SIPs and a handful of insurance premiums, and every year they face the same choice between the old and new tax regimes. An AI CFO built for India should understand all of these natively, from a INR 49 UPI payment to the 87A rebate.

## What an AI CFO actually does

1. **Reads your statements.** You upload PDFs, CSVs or photos. The software extracts every transaction and sorts it: rent, groceries, food delivery, EMIs, SIPs, subscriptions, transfers to family. Good ones open password-protected bank PDFs on your device, so the password never leaves it.
2. **Maps your money.** Income, fixed costs, discretionary spending, debt and savings, month by month. This is the picture most people never have, because it's spread across five apps and three banks.
3. **Finds what you're missing.** Forgotten subscriptions, card interest you didn't notice, cash idling in a savings account, deductions you're entitled to but haven't claimed.
4. **Works out your tax.** Your tax under both regimes from your real salary, rent and investments, which one leaves you more money, and what to do before 31 March. See the [old vs new regime guide](/learn/old-vs-new-tax-regime-fy-2026-27).
5. **Plans and reminds.** Goals turned into monthly amounts, card due dates, SIP dates, premium renewals and advance-tax instalments, with a nudge before each.
6. **Answers questions with your numbers.** Not "how much should someone save" but "how much can I save, given what I actually spent last quarter".

## What an AI CFO is not

It's worth being precise, because the label invites over-reading.

- **Not a SEBI-registered investment adviser.** An AI CFO can explain categories (an index fund, a liquid fund, PPF) and do the maths, but recommending specific securities for you is regulated advice in India. Kosh, for example, says plainly that it is an educational planning tool and does not recommend particular funds or stocks.
- **Not a broker or a bank.** It doesn't hold your money, move it or execute trades. If an app can move money, it's a payments or investment platform, which is a different kind of product with different risks.
- **Not a chartered accountant.** It can estimate your tax and prepare you for filing, but complex situations (notices, scrutiny, business audits, foreign assets) still need a CA. See [Kosh vs a CA](/compare/kosh-vs-chartered-accountant).
- **Not magic.** It only knows what's in the documents you give it. A statement from one bank shows one bank.

For most salaried people the honest answer is a mix: an AI CFO for the everyday picture and the year-round tax plan, and a CA when something unusual happens. Our [comparison of AI CFO apps in India](/compare/best-ai-cfo-apps-india) goes further.

## How to judge one before you trust it

- **Where your data goes.** Does it ask for bank passwords or net-banking logins? It shouldn't need to. Are statements stored encrypted, and can you delete them, and everything derived from them, yourself? Read the [security page](/legal/security) of any service you try.
- **Whether it can move money.** A planning tool that can't move money can't lose it. That's a feature.
- **How it knows the rules.** Tax slabs, rebates and limits change every Budget. Ask how the app keeps them current and whether it shows sources and dates.
- **Whether it's selling you something.** Many free finance apps earn commissions on the products they suggest. A subscription you pay for aligns the app with you; a free app with product placements may not.
- **Whether its answers use your numbers.** Generic advice is free everywhere. The value is in "you spent INR 6,200 on delivery last month, INR 2,400 more than in June".

## Do you need one?

You probably don't if your finances are simple, you already track them, and you enjoy doing it. You probably do if any of these sound familiar: you aren't sure which tax regime is right for you; your card bill surprises you; you have savings goals but no monthly number for each; you've meant to "sort out your finances" for a year.

Either way, you can do a lot of the CFO's thinking yourself with free tools. Start with these:

**Where Kosh fits**

Kosh is an AI CFO built for India by Primedepth Labs. Upload a statement and it maps your money, works out your tax under both regimes and tells you the one thing to fix first. It never asks for bank logins and can't move money.

## Frequently asked questions

What is an AI CFO?

An AI CFO is software that reads your financial statements, builds a picture of your money, and keeps working on it: finding leaks, estimating tax, planning goals and reminding you before due dates. It does for a person what a chief financial officer does for a company.

Is an AI CFO the same as a robo-adviser?

No. A robo-adviser builds and manages an investment portfolio, often through its own platform. An AI CFO looks at your whole financial life, including spending, debt, tax and goals, and helps you plan, without holding or investing your money.

Can an AI CFO give investment advice in India?

Personalised advice on specific securities is regulated by SEBI and needs a registered investment adviser. An AI CFO that isn't registered can explain options and categories and do the calculations, but shouldn't tell you which fund or stock to buy.

Is it safe to upload bank statements to an AI app?

It can be, if the app never asks for bank logins or OTPs, opens locked PDFs on your device, stores files encrypted, can't move money and lets you delete everything. Check those points on its security and privacy pages before uploading.

Does an AI CFO replace a chartered accountant?

Not for complex work. An AI CFO handles the everyday picture and year-round tax planning; a CA is still the right person for notices, scrutiny, audits, business accounts and unusual income.
