## How the 18 LPA in-hand salary works

A 18 LPA package means a cost to company of INR 18 lakh a year. Assuming basic pay at half of CTC (the Labour Codes floor), your employer's 12% PF contribution (INR 1,08,000) and a gratuity provision of 4.81% of basic (INR 43,290) sit inside that CTC but never reach your account, so your gross salary is INR 16,48,710, or INR 1,37,393 a month.

From gross, your own 12% PF (INR 1,08,000 a year) and INR 2,500 of professional tax are deducted, along with INR 1,20,699 of income tax in the new regime. That leaves INR 14,17,511 a year, about INR 1,18,126 a month: 79% of your CTC.

Your taxable income after the INR 75,000 standard deduction is INR 15,73,710, which reaches the 15% slab, and tax works out to INR 1,20,699 a year in the new regime (INR 10,058 a month of TDS). In the old regime, with INR 1.5 lakh of 80C, it's INR 2,56,218.

The old regime only beats the new one if your total old-regime deductions (80C including your PF, HRA, 80D health insurance, home-loan interest) come to more than INR 5,86,853 a year. Your PF alone counts for INR 1,08,000 of that.

Compared with 16 LPA (INR 1,06,242 a month), the extra INR 2 lakh of CTC adds INR 11,884 a month to take-home, INR 5,942 for each lakh; the rest goes to PF, gratuity and INR 28,578 more tax.

In-hand = CTC − employer PF − gratuity − employee PF − professional tax − income tax

## Worked example: 18 LPA with PF on the INR 15,000 ceiling

Some employers cap PF at 12% of INR 15,000 (INR 1,800 a month each) rather than 12% of full basic (INR 9,000). At 18 LPA that leaves INR 17,35,110 of gross salary and INR 1,31,142 a month in hand, INR 13,016 more than with full PF, but INR 1,72,800 a year less going into your EPF.

## Good to know

- If your employer calculates PF on the INR 15,000 statutory wage ceiling instead of full basic, take-home rises by INR 13,016 a month to INR 1,31,142, at the cost of slower EPF savings.
- If 10% of the package is variable pay, fixed take-home drops to about INR 1,06,199 a month; the bonus arrives separately, taxed, when it's paid.
- In Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and other states without professional tax, add INR 208 a month.
- Ask for employer NPS at 14% of basic: it's deductible even in the new regime and would cut your tax by about INR 19,656 a year.
