## How the advance tax calculator works

If your tax for the year, after TDS and TCS, is INR 10,000 or more, you must pay it in advance during the year rather than at filing time. Salaried people with only salary income usually don't, because TDS covers it, but freelancers, landlords, investors with capital gains and people with large interest income often do.

Enter your estimated tax for the whole year (use the income tax calculator for this) and the TDS you expect. The calculator schedules the balance: 15% by 15 June, 45% cumulatively by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March. If you use presumptive taxation under 44AD or 44ADA, the whole amount is due in one instalment by 15 March.

Capital gains and lottery winnings that arise later in the year only need to be paid in the instalments after they arise, so you're not penalised for a sale you couldn't foresee.

## Worked example: Farhan, a freelance designer

Farhan expects to owe INR 1.8 lakh of tax this year and his clients don't deduct TDS. He pays INR 27,000 by 15 June, INR 54,000 by 15 September, INR 54,000 by 15 December and the last INR 45,000 by 15 March.

## Good to know

- Senior citizens (60+) without business or professional income are exempt from advance tax.
- Pay through the e-Pay Tax service on the income-tax portal using challan ITNS 280, choosing 'advance tax'.
- Paying 12% by June and 36% by September is enough to avoid 234C interest for those two instalments.
- If your estimate turns out high, the excess comes back as a refund with interest when you file.

## Frequently asked questions

Who needs to pay advance tax?

Anyone whose tax for the year, after TDS and TCS, is INR 10,000 or more. Resident senior citizens with no business or professional income are exempt.

Do salaried employees pay advance tax?

Usually not, because the employer deducts TDS on salary. But if you also have rent, interest, capital gains or freelance income that pushes your untaxed liability above INR 10,000, you need to pay advance tax on that part.

What happens if I miss an advance tax date?

You pay simple interest of 1% a month on the shortfall under section 234C for the missed instalment, and if you've paid less than 90% of your tax by 31 March, 1% a month under 234B until you pay.

When is advance tax due under presumptive taxation?

If you declare income under section 44AD or 44ADA (now section 58 of the Income-tax Act, 2025), the whole advance tax is due in one instalment by 15 March.
