## How the bike loan EMI calculator works

Two-wheeler loans usually run 12 to 48 months and fund a large share of the on-road price. They come from banks, NBFCs and captive finance arms of manufacturers. Rates vary widely by lender and borrower; the 11% default is a neutral illustration.

Enter the amount financed, the yearly rate and the tenure in months. For loans up to 24 months the schedule shows every month's principal, interest and balance, so you can see exactly what you'd owe if you sold the bike or closed the loan early.

Processing and documentation fees on small loans are often a flat amount, which can be a large percentage of a INR 1 lakh loan. Enter it as a percentage of the loan to see the APR with 18% GST added. On a short loan, a fee of even 1 to 2% adds noticeably to the yearly cost.

Some dealer schemes quote a flat rate or a 'low EMI' that hides advance EMIs collected upfront. If you pay one or two EMIs at the start, you effectively borrow less for the same instalments. Ask for the reducing rate and the APR from the Key Fact Statement.

## Worked example: Vikram's commuter bike in Pune

Vikram finances INR 95,000 of a 150cc motorcycle at 10.5% for 18 months, and the dealer waives the processing fee during a festival offer. His EMI is INR 5,727 and he pays INR 8,092 in interest in all. In the first month INR 831 of his EMI is interest; by the end it is almost all principal.

## Good to know

- Ask whether any EMIs are collected in advance. Advance EMIs raise the effective rate even when the quoted rate looks low.
- Insurance, extended warranty and accessories added at the dealer increase the loan. Price them separately before agreeing.
- After the last EMI, collect the NOC and Form 35 and get the hypothecation removed from your RC at the RTO; you'll need it to sell the bike.
- Interest on a two-wheeler loan for personal use is not tax-deductible.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the EMI on a INR 1 lakh bike loan?

At 11% for 24 months, the EMI on INR 1 lakh is about INR 4,661, with roughly INR 11,860 of interest. Over 36 months the EMI drops to about INR 3,274 but interest rises to around INR 17,860.

How much down payment is needed for a two-wheeler loan?

It depends on the lender and your profile. Many offer to fund most of the on-road price, but a 10-25% down payment lowers the EMI and the interest and can get you a better rate.

What is a zero down payment bike loan?

A loan that funds the full on-road price. It usually carries a higher rate or fees, and sometimes advance EMIs. Compare its APR with a regular loan before choosing it.

Can I close a bike loan early?

Usually yes, often after a few EMIs. Fixed-rate loans may carry a foreclosure charge of a few percent of the outstanding amount, so check the Key Fact Statement for the exact terms.
