The converted amount stays blocked on your credit limit and is released as you repay. Closing the EMI early usually carries a foreclosure fee.

## How the credit card EMI calculator works

When you convert a card purchase or outstanding into EMIs, the bank books it as a small reducing-balance loan at a yearly rate, usually much lower than the card's revolving rate. Enter the amount, the rate and tenure from the bank's offer.

Each month's statement shows the EMI, which contains interest and principal, and 18% GST on the interest part. So your monthly outgo is slightly more than the EMI. The calculator adds up the GST over the whole tenure.

Banks also charge a one-time processing fee, as a percentage or a flat amount, with 18% GST. The true yearly cost shown includes the fee and all the GST, worked out from the cash flows.

For context, the calculator also shows what you'd pay in interest and GST if you simply revolved the same amount at the card's monthly rate while paying the same monthly sum. That gap is the reason to convert rather than revolve.

EMI = P x r x (1 + r)ⁿ / ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1); Extra cost = interest + fee + 18% x (interest + fee)

## Worked example: Farah's laptop on a 9-month card EMI

Farah converts a INR 90,000 laptop purchase into a 9-month EMI at 15% a year, with a 1.5% processing fee. Her EMI is INR 10,635. Over nine months she pays INR 5,718 in interest, a INR 1,350 fee and INR 1,272 GST on both, so the conversion costs INR 8,340 in all, a true yearly cost of 22.2%. Revolving the same amount at 3.6% a month would have cost INR 23,624.

## Good to know

- The converted amount stays blocked on your credit limit and is released gradually as you pay EMIs.
- Foreclosing a card EMI early usually carries a fee, often a percentage of the outstanding principal, plus GST.
- You can usually convert only within a window after the purchase or before the statement due date. Converting after the due date may mean interest has already been charged.
- Compare with a personal loan for large amounts. A loan at a similar rate with a lower fee can work out cheaper and doesn't block your card limit.

## Frequently asked questions

Is credit card EMI a good idea?

It is much cheaper than revolving the balance at around 3.5% a month, and it gives you a fixed payoff date. It still has a cost, from interest, a processing fee and 18% GST, so only use it if you can't pay the bill in full.

Is GST charged on credit card EMI?

Yes. 18% GST is charged on the interest part of each EMI and on the processing fee. It appears as a separate line on your statement each month.

Does converting to EMI affect my credit score?

Not directly, but the converted amount stays on your card limit, which keeps utilisation high until it is repaid. Paying each EMI on time protects your score.

Can I convert my whole credit card bill into EMI?

Many banks let you convert the outstanding balance, not just single purchases, subject to a minimum amount. The rate and fee for bill conversion can differ from purchase EMIs.
