## How the crorepati calculator works

Enter the target (INR 1 crore by default), your age now and the age you want to reach it by. The calculator grows anything you've already invested to that age at the assumed return, and works out the monthly SIP needed to cover the rest.

It shows two routes: a flat SIP that stays the same every month, and a step-up SIP that starts lower and rises by your chosen percentage each year. The step-up route is often more realistic because it starts with what you can afford now.

The table compares the SIP needed over 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years. It shows the single biggest lever: every extra five years cuts the required SIP roughly in half at a 12% assumed return.

Finally, it puts the target in today's money. At 6% inflation, INR 1 crore in 20 years buys about what INR 31 lakh buys today. Becoming a crorepati is a milestone, not a finish line.

SIP = (Target − existing x (1 + i)ⁿ) / {\[((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) / i\] x (1 + i)}

## Worked example: Aditya wants INR 1 crore by 45

Aditya, 25, a designer in Mumbai, has INR 1.5 lakh invested and wants INR 1 crore by 45. At an assumed 12%, he needs a SIP of INR 8,374 a month, or INR 4,207 to start if he raises it 10% every year. At 6% inflation, that INR 1 crore will buy what about INR 31.18 lakh buys today.

## Good to know

- Start date matters more than amount: at 12% assumed, a 25-year-old needs about half the SIP of a 30-year-old for the same crore by 50.
- A crore is a round number, not a plan. For retirement, work out the corpus your expenses need with the retirement calculator.
- Long-term gains on equity funds above INR 1.25 lakh a year are taxed at 12.5% when you sell, so your in-hand crore will be a little less.
- Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks. Plan with a cautious return and treat anything extra as a bonus.

## Frequently asked questions

How much SIP is needed to make INR 1 crore?

At an assumed 12% a year: about INR 43,000 a month for 10 years, INR 20,000 for 15 years, INR 10,000 for 20 years and INR 5,300 for 25 years. Returns aren't guaranteed, so a lower assumed rate means a higher SIP.

Can I become a crorepati with a INR 5,000 SIP?

At an assumed 12% a year, a INR 5,000 monthly SIP takes about 26 years to reach INR 1 crore. With a 10% yearly step-up, it takes about 21 years.

Is INR 1 crore enough to retire?

It depends on your expenses and when you retire. In 20 years, INR 1 crore will be worth roughly INR 31 lakh in today's money at 6% inflation, which supports a modest lifestyle for a limited time. Calculate your own retirement number instead of relying on a round figure.

What return should I assume for a crorepati SIP?

Equity funds are often illustrated at 10% to 12% over long periods, but nothing is guaranteed. Try 10% to see a more cautious plan and adjust the SIP if returns turn out better.
