## How the crypto tax calculator works

Income from transferring a virtual digital asset (crypto coins, tokens, NFTs) is taxed under a special regime at a flat 30%, plus 4% cess. It doesn't matter how long you held it, and there is no short-term or long-term distinction.

The only deduction allowed is the cost of acquisition. Exchange fees, gas fees, internet or hardware costs are not deductible. There is no basic exemption set-off and no 87A rebate, so even a student with no other income pays 30% from the first rupee of profit.

Losses are harsh: a loss on one coin can't be set off against a profit on another, can't be set off against any other income, and can't be carried forward. The calculator shows other crypto losses you enter, but they don't reduce the tax.

On each sale, 1% TDS is deducted under section 194S when your sales cross the yearly threshold (INR 50,000 for individuals with no business, INR 10,000 for others). Indian exchanges deduct it automatically. It appears in Form 26AS and is credited against your final tax, so the balance is what you still owe.

Tax = (sale value − cost of acquisition) x 30% x 1.04

TDS

1% of sale value, adjusted against the tax

## Worked example: Karan books a profit on Ethereum

Karan, a INR 8 lakh earner in Indore, sold coins bought for INR 1.5 lakh at INR 2.4 lakh, making INR 90,000. He also lost INR 40,000 on another token this year, which the law ignores. Tax is 30% of INR 90,000, INR 27,000, plus INR 1,080 cess: INR 28,080. The exchange already deducted 1% TDS of INR 2,400, so he still owes INR 25,680.

## Good to know

- Swapping one crypto for another is a transfer: each leg can create a taxable gain, and TDS applies.
- Crypto received as a gift is taxed in your hands if gifts from non-relatives exceed INR 50,000 in the year. Airdrops and staking rewards are taxed as income when received.
- Report VDA gains in Schedule VDA of ITR-2 or ITR-3, trade by trade, with dates of purchase and sale.
- Surcharge on crypto gains is not capped at 15% the way it is for equity capital gains.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the tax on crypto in India in FY 2026-27?

A flat 30% on profits from selling or swapping crypto, plus 4% cess, so effectively 31.2% before any surcharge. Holding period doesn't matter, and only the purchase cost can be deducted.

Can I set off crypto losses?

No. A loss on one virtual digital asset can't be set off against a gain on another, against any other income, or carried forward to later years. Each profitable trade is taxed on its own.

Is the 1% TDS on crypto an extra tax?

No. It's an advance collection that counts toward your final tax. If your total tax is lower than the TDS, as with a loss-making year, you get the difference back as a refund when you file.

Do I pay tax on crypto if I don't withdraw to my bank?

Yes. Tax arises when you sell or swap, not when you withdraw rupees. Selling for a stablecoin or another token is a taxable transfer even if no money reaches your bank account.

Is crypto income eligible for the INR 12 lakh tax-free limit?

No. The 87A rebate doesn't apply to tax on crypto gains. Crypto profits also count toward total income, so they can push you over INR 12 lakh and cost you the rebate on your salary.
