## How the EPF calculator works

Every month you contribute 12% of your basic salary plus dearness allowance. Your employer also contributes 12%, but splits it: 8.33% of wages up to INR 15,000 (at most INR 1,250 a month) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme, and the rest, 3.67% at the ceiling or more for higher salaries, goes to your EPF. Only the EPF part builds your corpus.

Some employers calculate PF only on the INR 15,000 wage ceiling, so both shares are INR 1,800 a month. Others use your actual basic. Choose the option that matches your payslip. If you joined after September 2014 earning above INR 15,000, you may not be in EPS, in which case the full 12% from your employer goes to EPF.

EPFO declares the interest rate each year; it is 8.25% for FY 2025-26. Interest is calculated monthly on the running balance and credited once a year. The calculator raises your basic every year by the hike you enter and compounds the balance until your retirement age.

EPF is tax-free on withdrawal after 5 years of continuous service. But interest on your own contributions (including VPF) above INR 2.5 lakh a year is taxable each year. The calculator warns you if you cross that line.

Monthly EPF credit = 12% of wage (you) + 12% of wage − 8.33% of min(wage, INR 15,000) (employer)

Rate

8.25% (FY 2025-26), declared yearly by EPFO

## Worked example: Sameer, 35, adds VPF to boost his PF

Sameer, a 35-year-old engineering manager in Pune, has INR 9 lakh in EPF and a INR 75,000 monthly basic. He contributes 12% (INR 9,000) plus INR 15,000 VPF, and his employer adds INR 7,751 to EPF after INR 1,250 goes to EPS. With 7% yearly raises and 8.25% interest, his EPF reaches about INR 4.26 crore at 58. His own contributions of INR 2.88 lakh this year exceed INR 2.5 lakh by INR 38,000, so interest on that slice is taxable.

At 58, in 23 years - INR 4.26 crore

Your own contributions this year are about INR 2,88,000, which is INR 38,000 over the INR 2.5 lakh limit. Interest on the excess is taxable every year.

## Good to know

- Withdrawals before 5 years of continuous service are taxable, and TDS applies above INR 50,000. Moving jobs doesn't break continuity if you transfer the account.
- If there's no employer contribution (for example in some government funds), the tax-free contribution limit is INR 5 lakh instead of INR 2.5 lakh.
- An account with no fresh contributions keeps earning interest until you turn 58, so when you change jobs, transfer it rather than withdraw.
- The EPF rate is declared after the year ends and has varied between 8.1% and 8.65% over the past decade. Treat projections as illustrative.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the EPF interest rate for FY 2025-26?

8.25%, as declared by EPFO. The rate is set each year and credited to accounts after the year closes.

How much of my employer's 12% goes to EPF?

Employers send 8.33% of wages, capped at INR 15,000 (INR 1,250 a month), to the pension scheme. The rest of their 12% goes to your EPF: INR 550 at a INR 15,000 wage, or INR 7,750 at a INR 75,000 basic if PF is on actual salary.

Is EPF interest taxable?

Only on your own contributions above INR 2.5 lakh a year. Interest on that excess is taxable every year. Withdrawals after 5 years of continuous service are tax-free.

What is VPF and is it worth it?

Voluntary Provident Fund lets you contribute more than 12% of basic to EPF, earning the same rate. It counts for 80C in the old regime, but your total own contributions above INR 2.5 lakh a year earn taxable interest.

Can I withdraw EPF before retirement?

Partial withdrawals are allowed for specific needs such as a house, education, marriage or illness, subject to service and amount limits. You can withdraw fully after two months of unemployment.
