## How the in-hand salary calculator works

Your cost to company is more than your salary. It includes your employer's 12% PF contribution and, at many companies, a provision for gratuity (4.81% of basic, which is 15/26 of a month's basic per year of service). Neither is paid to you monthly, so the calculator removes them first to get your gross salary.

From gross salary it then deducts your own 12% PF contribution, professional tax (up to INR 2,500 a year depending on your state) and income tax under the regime you pick, with the standard deduction applied. Variable pay is part of your CTC but paid only if targets are met, so the calculator shows your monthly in-hand with and without it.

Basic salary drives most of this. Under the Labour Codes in force since 21 November 2025, basic plus DA should be at least half of total pay, which raises PF and gratuity and trims take-home slightly. Some employers calculate PF only on the INR 15,000 statutory wage ceiling, which raises in-hand pay; there's a switch for that.

In-hand = CTC − employer PF − gratuity − employee PF − professional tax − income tax

## Worked example: Aditya, INR 18 lakh CTC with 10% variable

Aditya's offer is INR 18 lakh CTC, with INR 1.8 lakh as variable pay and basic at half of fixed pay (INR 67,500 a month). After INR 97,200 of employer PF and INR 38,961 of gratuity, his gross salary is INR 16.64 lakh. Taking off his own PF, INR 2,500 of professional tax and INR 1,23,059 of tax in the new regime, he takes home about INR 1,20,090 a month if the full variable pay comes through, or about INR 1,06,199 without it.

## Good to know

- Professional tax is levied by states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu; Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh don't charge it.
- Joining bonuses, retention bonuses and ESOPs are usually outside CTC calculations but fully taxable when paid.
- Meal cards, NPS through the employer and phone reimbursements can raise in-hand pay without raising CTC. Ask HR what's flexible.
- Your PF isn't lost: both shares sit in your EPF account earning 8.25% a year (FY 2025-26 rate).

## Frequently asked questions

How much in-hand salary will I get from a INR 10 lakh CTC?

With basic at half of CTC, PF on full basic and gratuity included, roughly INR 71,000 a month in the new regime, where your tax is zero. If PF is on the INR 15,000 ceiling only, it's closer to INR 76,000.

Why is my in-hand salary so much lower than CTC divided by 12?

CTC includes your employer's PF, gratuity and sometimes insurance and variable pay, none of which arrive in your monthly salary. Then your own PF, professional tax and income tax are deducted. Together these typically take 15% to 30% of CTC.

Does the new tax regime increase in-hand salary?

For most people earning up to INR 25 lakh with modest deductions, yes, because TDS is lower. If you pay high rent or have a home loan, the old regime may leave you more; compare both.

Is gratuity part of in-hand salary?

No. Gratuity is paid in a lump sum when you leave after at least five years (one year for fixed-term employees under the Labour Codes). If your CTC includes it, it reduces your monthly in-hand pay.
