## How the senior citizen tax calculator works

Enter your pension in the salary box (pension gets the same standard deduction as salary: INR 75,000 new, INR 50,000 old) and your interest from FDs, post office schemes and savings accounts in the interest box. Rent or other income goes under other income.

The old regime gives seniors a higher basic exemption: INR 3 lakh at 60 to 79 and INR 5 lakh at 80 and above. Section 80TTB exempts up to INR 50,000 of interest from deposits with banks, co-operative banks and the post office. Health insurance under 80D is allowed up to INR 50,000 for a senior, and medical expenses for an uninsured senior can be claimed within the same limit.

The new regime has no age-based exemption, but its INR 12 lakh rebate is generous: a pensioner with INR 12.75 lakh of pension and interest together often pays nothing. The calculator shows both and picks the cheaper.

## Worked example: Mr. Rao, 68, pension plus FD interest

Mr. Rao draws a INR 6 lakh pension and earns INR 2.5 lakh of FD interest. In the old regime he can deduct INR 50,000 standard deduction, INR 1 lakh in SCSS deposits under 80C, a INR 40,000 health premium and INR 50,000 under 80TTB, which leaves INR 6.1 lakh taxable and a bill of INR 33,280. In the new regime his taxable income of INR 7.75 lakh is under the rebate limit, so he pays nothing.

## Good to know

- Banks deduct TDS on deposit interest above INR 1 lakh a year for seniors (INR 50,000 for others). If your total tax is nil, submit Form 15H to stop TDS.
- People aged 75 or more with only pension and interest from the same bank can skip filing an ITR under section 194P; the bank computes and deducts the tax.
- Seniors without business income don't pay advance tax.
- 80TTB covers deposit interest only. Interest from bonds or debt funds is taxed in full.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the tax-free income limit for senior citizens?

In the new regime, taxable income up to INR 12 lakh is effectively tax-free for everyone through the 87A rebate. In the old regime, the basic exemption is INR 3 lakh for ages 60 to 79 and INR 5 lakh for 80 and above, and the INR 12,500 rebate makes taxable income up to INR 5 lakh tax-free.

Is 80TTB available in the new regime?

No. 80TTB, like most deductions, is an old-regime benefit. In the new regime all interest is added to income, but the higher rebate often makes up for it.

Do pensioners get a standard deduction?

Yes. Pension from a former employer is taxed as salary and gets the same standard deduction: INR 75,000 in the new regime and INR 50,000 in the old. Family pension has its own deduction of up to INR 25,000 (new) or INR 15,000 (old).

Should a senior submit Form 15H?

Only if the tax on your estimated total income for the year is nil. If you'll owe any tax, submitting 15H is a false declaration; let TDS be deducted and claim any excess back as a refund.
