## How the tax on INR 10 lakh salary works

A INR 10 lakh gross salary becomes INR 9.25 lakh of taxable income after the INR 75,000 standard deduction. Slab tax on that is INR 32,500 (5% of INR 4 lakh plus 10% of INR 1.25 lakh), and the 87A rebate cancels all of it. Tax: nil.

In the old regime, even with typical deductions (INR 1.5 lakh 80C, INR 25,000 health insurance and HRA on INR 12,500 a month rent), taxable income stays around INR 6.75 lakh and the tax is about INR 49,400. There's no realistic set of deductions that beats zero.

If your INR 10 lakh is CTC rather than gross salary, your gross is lower still (after employer PF and gratuity), and you pay no tax either way. Expect around INR 71,000 a month in hand with PF on full basic.

## Worked example: Asha maxes every old-regime deduction

Asha earns INR 10 lakh and pays INR 20,000 a month in rent. Her HRA exemption is INR 1.9 lakh and she fills 80C and 80D, cutting old-regime taxable income to INR 5.85 lakh. She'd still pay INR 30,680 in the old regime, against nothing in the new.

## Good to know

- Choose the new regime with your employer at the start of the year so no TDS is deducted.
- You still need to file an ITR if your gross income is above the basic exemption limit, even when the tax is nil.
- Interest, rent or capital gains on top of salary can push taxable income above INR 12 lakh; add them in the calculator.

## Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on a INR 10 lakh salary?

Nothing in the new regime for FY 2026-27: taxable income of INR 9.25 lakh is under the INR 12 lakh rebate limit. In the old regime, with typical deductions, about INR 30,000 to INR 50,000.

What is the in-hand salary for INR 10 lakh CTC?

Around INR 71,000 a month if basic is half of CTC and PF is on full basic, since income tax is nil. If PF is on the INR 15,000 ceiling, closer to INR 76,000.

Do I need to file an ITR if my tax is zero?

Yes, if your gross total income exceeds the basic exemption limit (INR 4 lakh in the new regime). Filing also lets you claim back any TDS.
