## How the tax on INR 15 lakh salary works

Taxable income in the new regime is INR 14.25 lakh after the standard deduction. Slab tax: INR 20,000 on INR 4 to INR 8 lakh, INR 40,000 on INR 8 to INR 12 lakh and INR 33,750 on the next INR 2.25 lakh at 15%, which totals INR 93,750, plus 4% cess for INR 97,500.

In the old regime with a typical INR 3.75 lakh of deductions (standard deduction, HRA, 80C and health insurance), taxable income is INR 11.25 lakh and the tax is INR 1,56,000. You'd need roughly INR 5.6 lakh of deductions to break even.

If INR 15 lakh is your CTC, expect around INR 1 lakh a month in hand with PF on full basic, after about INR 78,000 of tax on your lower gross salary.

## Worked example: Meera rents in Bengaluru

Meera pays INR 30,000 rent in Bengaluru, one of the eight 50% HRA cities from FY 2026-27. Her exemption is still INR 2.85 lakh, because rent minus 10% of basic is the lowest limit. With full 80C, INR 50,000 in NPS and a health policy, her old-regime tax is INR 1,04,520. The new regime still wins, at INR 97,500.

## Good to know

- From FY 2026-27, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad join Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai at the 50% HRA limit. If your exemption doesn't rise, the rent limit is the one holding it back.
- At INR 15 lakh your marginal rate in the new regime is 15%, so INR 1 lakh of employer NPS saves INR 15,600.
- A home loan with INR 2 lakh of interest can swing the comparison; check with your numbers.
