## How the tax on INR 25 lakh salary works

New regime: taxable income is INR 24.25 lakh, just into the 30% band. Slab tax is INR 3 lakh on the first INR 24 lakh plus INR 7,500 on the last INR 25,000, INR 3,07,500 in all, and INR 3,19,800 with cess.

Old regime, with HRA on INR 31,250 rent, 80C and 80D, leaves INR 20.25 lakh taxable and INR 4,36,800 of tax. At this salary nearly every extra rupee in the old regime is taxed at 30%, so it needs about INR 8 lakh of deductions to compete.

From a 25 LPA CTC, after employer PF, gratuity, your PF, professional tax and about INR 2.64 lakh of tax, take-home is around INR 1.56 lakh a month.

## Worked example: Nikhil restructures salary into NPS

Nikhil's employer agrees to pay 14% of his INR 12.5 lakh basic, INR 1.75 lakh, into NPS as part of his CTC. That's deductible in the new regime, bringing his taxable income to INR 22.5 lakh and his tax to INR 2,73,000, INR 46,800 less than before.

## Good to know

- At INR 25 lakh, INR 1 lakh of employer NPS saves INR 31,200 in the new regime.
- The combined INR 7.5 lakh cap on employer PF, NPS and superannuation contributions is still far away at this salary.
- If you also have equity gains, remember the INR 1.25 lakh LTCG exemption resets each year: booking gains up to it each year can be tax-efficient.

## Frequently asked questions

How much tax on INR 25 lakh salary?

INR 3,19,800 in the new regime for FY 2026-27. In the old regime with typical deductions, about INR 4.3 lakh to INR 4.5 lakh.

What is 25 LPA in hand per month?

In the new regime, employer NPS up to 14% of basic is the main lever. In the old regime, HRA, a home loan, 80C, your own NPS and 80D can add up, but you'd need about INR 8 lakh of deductions to beat the new regime.
