## How the tax on INR 30 lakh salary works

New regime: INR 29.25 lakh taxable. Slab tax is INR 3 lakh up to INR 24 lakh plus 30% of INR 5.25 lakh (INR 1,57,500), INR 4,57,500 in total, and INR 4,75,800 with cess. That's about INR 39,650 a month.

Old regime with typical deductions leaves INR 24.75 lakh taxable and INR 5,77,200 of tax. But at this level HRA can be large: in a metro, 50% of basic is the cap, and high rent can turn the comparison around.

From a 30 LPA CTC, after PF, gratuity, professional tax and about INR 3.97 lakh of tax, take-home is roughly INR 1.81 lakh a month.

## Worked example: Zoya pays INR 60,000 rent in Mumbai

Zoya's basic is INR 15 lakh and she pays INR 60,000 a month in Mumbai. Her HRA exemption is INR 5.7 lakh. With 80C, her own NPS and health cover for herself and her senior parents, her deductions total INR 8.95 lakh, and the old regime costs INR 4,61,760, INR 14,040 less than the new regime.

## Good to know

- Rent paid to parents must be real: transfers from your account, a rent agreement, and the rent declared in their returns.
- If you switch to the old regime because of HRA, keep receipts and the landlord's PAN; HRA claims are commonly checked.
- Employer NPS works in both regimes, so add it before comparing.
