## How the tax on INR 50 lakh salary works

New regime: taxable income is INR 49.25 lakh. Slab tax is INR 3 lakh up to INR 24 lakh plus 30% of INR 25.25 lakh, INR 10,57,500 in total, and INR 10,99,800 with cess. Your effective rate is 22%.

Surcharge applies when taxable income crosses INR 50 lakh: 10% of the tax, with marginal relief so that crossing the line can't cost more than the extra income. The new regime caps surcharge at 25%; the old regime goes to 37% above INR 5 crore.

In the old regime, deductions save 30% plus cess, but at this salary the old regime needs nearly INR 10 lakh of deductions to win. With typical deductions it costs INR 11,38,800.

## Worked example: Vivek earns INR 55 lakh

At INR 55 lakh Vivek's taxable income in the new regime is INR 54.25 lakh, so a 10% surcharge applies to his INR 12,07,500 slab tax. Marginal relief doesn't help this far above the line, and his new-regime tax with surcharge and cess is INR 13,81,380. In the old regime, a INR 5.5 lakh HRA exemption, 80C and 80D keep his taxable income at INR 47.25 lakh, under the surcharge line, so it costs INR 12,79,200: INR 1,02,180 less.
