## How the inflation calculator works

Inflation is the yearly rise in prices. At 6%, something that costs INR 1,00,000 today costs INR 1,06,000 next year and INR 1,79,085 in ten. The same maths in reverse tells you how little today's INR 1 lakh will buy in future.

In future mode, the calculator grows today's amount at the inflation rate to show the future cost, and shrinks it to show what today's money will be worth then. In past mode, it grows an old amount to today's prices, so you can compare a salary or price from years ago with today's.

The default of 6% is close to India's average consumer price inflation over the last decade. Your personal inflation depends on what you spend on: school fees, medical costs and rents have often risen faster than the overall index.

These are estimates using one steady rate. Actual inflation varies from year to year.

Future cost = Today's cost x (1 + inflation)ⁿ

## Worked example: What was INR 50,000 in 2011 worth today?

Suresh's first job in 2011 paid INR 50,000 a month. At an average 6.5% inflation, that's about INR 1,28,592 in today's money, 2.6 times as much. A INR 50,000 salary today would buy what about INR 19,441 bought back then.

At 6.5% a year, prices double roughly every 11.0 years. Your own inflation (school fees, healthcare, rent) can run higher than the CPI.

## Good to know

- Plan long-term goals at your own inflation, not just the headline CPI. Many planners use 8% to 10% for education and healthcare.
- An investment that earns less than inflation after tax is losing purchasing power, even though the rupee balance grows.
- At 6% inflation, prices double roughly every 12 years. A retirement that lasts 25 years needs income that more than quadruples along the way.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the average inflation rate in India?

Consumer price inflation has averaged roughly 5% to 6% a year over the last decade, with some years above 7% and some below 4%. RBI's monetary policy targets 4% CPI inflation within a band of 2% to 6%.

What will INR 1 crore be worth in 20 years?

At 6% inflation, INR 1 crore in 20 years will buy what about INR 31 lakh buys today. At 7%, about INR 26 lakh. That's why long-term goals need to be inflated before you plan them.

How do I calculate the future value of money with inflation?

Multiply today's cost by (1 + inflation rate) raised to the number of years. At 6% for 10 years, multiply by about 1.79.

Is CPI or WPI inflation used for personal planning?

CPI (consumer price index) measures what households pay and is the better guide for personal finances. WPI tracks wholesale prices. The Cost Inflation Index used for capital gains tax is a separate, notified number.
