## How the KVP calculator works

Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) is a post office certificate that doubles the amount invested over a set period. The period depends on the rate when you buy: at 7.5% compounded yearly (October to December 2026) it is 115 months, or 9 years 7 months. That rate and period are locked in for your certificate.

The calculator adds the doubling period to your investment date to give the maturity date. If you change the rate, it works out the matching period using the compound-interest formula, which is how the government sets the official figure.

You can encash a KVP early after 2 years 6 months from the date of issue, at values set by the post office for each half-year. The table shows approximate values at each year so you can see what an early exit roughly gives you.

KVP has no 80C benefit. The interest is taxable at your slab, either year by year on an accrual basis or all at once when the certificate matures. There's no TDS, so report it yourself.

Doubling period (years) = ln 2 / ln(1 + rate)

At 7.5%

9.58 years ~= 115 months

## Worked example: Savita invests INR 5 lakh from a property sale

Savita, 52, a shop owner in Ludhiana, puts INR 5 lakh into KVP on 1 December 2026 at 7.5%. It doubles to INR 10 lakh on 1 July 2036, after 115 months. The INR 5 lakh interest is taxable; at her 10% slab with cess that's about INR 52,000 over the term. She needs a PAN as the amount is above INR 50,000.

## Good to know

- There's no maximum investment, but amounts above INR 10 lakh need proof of the source of funds, and above INR 50,000 a PAN.
- A KVP can be transferred from one person to another, and from one post office to another, under certain conditions.
- Rates and the doubling period are reset every quarter. A certificate keeps the terms on the date of purchase.

## Frequently asked questions

In how many months does KVP double in 2026?

115 months (9 years 7 months) for certificates bought between October and December 2026, at 7.5% compounded yearly.

Can I withdraw from KVP before maturity?

Yes, after 2 years 6 months from the date of issue. You get the principal plus interest as per the post office's encashment table for that point. Earlier withdrawal is allowed only on death or a court order.

Is KVP interest taxable?

Yes, at your slab rate. You can declare it every year as it accrues or all in the year of maturity. KVP doesn't qualify for 80C.

Who can buy a Kisan Vikas Patra?

Any resident adult, jointly by up to three adults, or a guardian on behalf of a minor. NRIs can't invest. Despite the name, you don't need to be a farmer.
