## How the net worth calculator works

List assets at what they are worth today, not what you paid. Bank balances and fixed deposits are easy. For EPF, use the latest balance on your EPFO passbook; for PPF and Sukanya Samriddhi, the passbook or bank statement; for NPS, your statement of transactions. Mutual funds and shares go in at current market value from your consolidated account statement.

Gold is a large hidden asset for many Indian families. Value jewellery by its gold content at today's rate, not by what the jeweller charged including making charges, and add gold coins, sovereign gold bonds and gold funds. Property goes in at a realistic resale value. Vehicles go in at what they would sell for today, which is usually far below the price paid.

Liabilities are the outstanding principal on every loan: home, car, two-wheeler, personal, education and gold loans, plus the full credit-card outstanding (not the minimum due), buy-now-pay-later balances and money owed to friends or family.

The calculator shows net worth, total assets and liabilities, and your debt-to-assets ratio. It also works out a financial net worth that leaves out property and vehicles and subtracts only non-home debts. That figure is what you could actually draw on to fund goals, because few people sell the home they live in.

Net worth = total assets − total liabilities

Total assets

deposits + EPF/PPF/NPS + funds and shares + gold + property + vehicles + other

Total liabilities

outstanding loans + credit-card dues + other debts

## Worked example: Kavita, 41, homeowner in Pune

Kavita owns a flat worth INR 90 lakh with INR 35 lakh of home loan left. She has INR 18 lakh in EPF, INR 9 lakh in PPF, INR 4 lakh in NPS, INR 28 lakh in funds and shares, INR 12 lakh of family gold, INR 6.5 lakh in the bank and FDs and a car worth INR 5 lakh, and owes INR 40,000 on her card. Her assets total INR 1,72,50,000 and liabilities INR 35,40,000, so her net worth is INR 1,37,10,000 with debt at 20.5% of assets. Leaving out the flat and car, her financial net worth is INR 77,10,000.

## Good to know

- EPF is often the largest financial asset for salaried people. It earned 8.25% for FY 2025-26, so check your passbook rather than guessing.
- Track net worth once or twice a year on the same date. The direction matters more than the level, especially early in your career.
- A rising net worth driven only by your home's estimated value is fragile. Watch the financial net worth line, which you can actually spend.
- Don't count a car as a store of wealth. Most lose 15-20% of their value in the first year and keep falling.

## Frequently asked questions

What is a good net worth by age in India?

There is no official benchmark, but one rough guide is to aim for financial net worth of about 1x your annual expenses by 30, 5x by 40 and 10x by 50, rising toward 25-30x by retirement. Your own goals and family situation matter far more than averages.

Should I include my house in net worth?

Yes, at a realistic market value, because it is an asset you own. But since you need somewhere to live, also look at net worth without it. This calculator shows both.

Is EPF part of net worth?

Yes. Your EPF balance, including the employer's share, belongs to you and counts as an asset. It is locked for retirement in most cases, so think of it as long-term wealth rather than spendable money.

How do I value gold jewellery for net worth?

Multiply the gold content in grams by today's price per gram for that purity. Ignore making charges and stones, which you would not get back on sale. Gold bonds and gold funds go in at their current market value.

Can net worth be negative?

Yes, if you owe more than you own. It is common early in a career, after an education loan or a car bought on credit. Paying off the highest-interest debt first is usually the fastest way back above zero.
