## How the new tax regime calculator works

Start from your gross salary and other income. The calculator takes off the INR 75,000 standard deduction (salaried people and pensioners only) and any employer contribution to NPS up to 14% of your basic salary. What's left is your taxable income.

Taxable income is taxed in seven bands: nothing up to INR 4 lakh, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% on each further INR 4 lakh, and 30% above INR 24 lakh. The slabs are the same for every age; senior citizens get no higher exemption in the new regime.

If taxable income is INR 12 lakh or less, the 87A rebate of up to INR 60,000 cancels the tax completely. Just above INR 12 lakh, marginal relief caps your tax at the amount by which you cross INR 12 lakh, so earning INR 10,000 more never costs you more than INR 10,000 in tax. Surcharge starts above INR 50 lakh and is capped at 25% in this regime, and 4% cess goes on top.

Tax = min(slab tax, taxable income − INR 12,00,000) when taxable income is just above INR 12 lakh

## Worked example: Ananya, INR 12.9 lakh salary, just over the line

Ananya's salary is INR 12.9 lakh, so her taxable income after the standard deduction is INR 12.15 lakh, INR 15,000 above the rebate limit. Her slab tax would be INR 62,250, but marginal relief caps it at the INR 15,000 excess. With cess she pays INR 15,600 for the year, about INR 1,300 a month.

## Good to know

- Slabs for FY 2026-27 are unchanged from FY 2025-26: Budget 2026 didn't touch them.
- The rebate doesn't apply to tax on special-rate income such as STCG on shares (20%) or LTCG (12.5%), so a person with INR 10 lakh salary and equity gains can still owe tax on the gains.
- Marginal relief at INR 12 lakh stops mattering at about INR 12.7 lakh of taxable income, where normal slab tax becomes lower than the excess.
- Employer NPS under 80CCD(2) is one of the very few deductions left in the new regime, and a good one to ask your employer about.

## Frequently asked questions

What are the new regime tax slabs for FY 2026-27?

Up to INR 4 lakh: nil. INR 4 to INR 8 lakh: 5%. INR 8 to INR 12 lakh: 10%. INR 12 to INR 16 lakh: 15%. INR 16 to INR 20 lakh: 20%. INR 20 to INR 24 lakh: 25%. Above INR 24 lakh: 30%. Add 4% cess, and surcharge above INR 50 lakh.

How is INR 12 lakh tax-free when the 5% slab starts at INR 4 lakh?

Tax on INR 12 lakh is INR 60,000 by the slabs, and the section 87A rebate gives back up to INR 60,000 to residents with taxable income up to INR 12 lakh. So the tax is calculated but fully rebated, leaving nothing to pay.

Do senior citizens get a higher exemption in the new regime?

No. The new regime uses the same slabs for every age. Seniors with large deposit interest or medical costs should compare the old regime, which has a INR 3 lakh (60 to 79) or INR 5 lakh (80+) exemption and the 80TTB and 80D deductions.

Is HRA exempt in the new regime?

No. House rent allowance is fully taxable in the new regime, as are LTA and most other allowances. That's the main reason people paying high rent sometimes find the old regime cheaper.
