## How the NPS calculator works

Enter your monthly contribution, how much you'll raise it each year, and an expected return. NPS returns depend on your mix of equity, corporate bonds and government securities, and on markets, so the 10% default is only an illustration. The calculator compounds each monthly contribution until your exit age.

At normal exit (60 or later) part of the corpus must buy an annuity from an insurer, which pays you a pension for life. Under PFRDA's exit rules revised in December 2025, non-government subscribers (corporate and individual accounts) must put at least 20% into an annuity and can take up to 80% as a lump sum; government employees still need at least 40% in an annuity. Set the annuity share field to what you plan to choose.

The monthly pension is the annuity amount x the annuity rate / 12. Annuity rates vary by insurer, your age and the type you choose (with or without return of purchase price, joint life), so the rate is an input too.

Tax: the lump sum up to 60% of the corpus is tax-free. The pension from the annuity is taxed as income at your slab. Contributions get deductions under 80CCD(1) and an extra INR 50,000 under 80CCD(1B) in the old regime, and employer contributions under 80CCD(2) in both regimes.

Pension per month = corpus x annuity share x annuity rate / 12

## Worked example: Divya, 40, starts NPS with INR 15,000 a month

Divya, 40, a lecturer in Dehradun, already has INR 3 lakh in NPS and adds INR 15,000 a month without increasing it. Assuming a 9% return, her corpus at 60 would be about INR 1.19 crore. She chooses to take 60%, about INR 71.38 lakh, the share that's clearly tax-free, as a lump sum, and to use INR 47.58 lakh to buy an annuity. At an assumed 6.5% annuity rate, that pays about INR 25,775 a month, taxable at her slab.

## Good to know

- If your corpus at exit is INR 8 lakh or less, you can withdraw all of it without buying an annuity. Between INR 8 lakh and INR 12 lakh, up to INR 6 lakh can come out as a lump sum and the rest through systematic withdrawals or an annuity.
- You can defer the lump sum or annuity purchase, or keep the account invested up to age 75 or beyond under newer rules, which can help if markets are down at 60.
- Exiting before 60 is stricter: generally at least 80% must buy an annuity.
- The INR 50,000 80CCD(1B) deduction is available only in the old regime. In the new regime, only the employer's contribution (up to 14% of basic) is deductible.

## Frequently asked questions

How much pension will I get from NPS?

It depends on your corpus, the share used for an annuity and the annuity rate. As a rough guide, every INR 10 lakh in an annuity at 6.5% pays about INR 5,400 a month before tax. Use the calculator with your own assumptions.

Is the NPS lump sum at 60 tax-free?

Up to 60% of the corpus is tax-free. PFRDA now lets non-government subscribers withdraw up to 80%, but the tax exemption was written for 60%, so check how anything above that is taxed. The annuity purchase isn't taxed; the pension it pays is taxable at your slab.

Can I withdraw 100% of NPS at 60?

Only if your corpus is INR 8 lakh or less. Otherwise non-government subscribers must buy an annuity with at least 20% of the corpus (up to 80% can be a lump sum), and government employees with at least 40%.

What return does NPS give?

There's no guaranteed return. Equity-heavy NPS schemes have historically delivered higher long-term returns than the government-bond schemes, with more ups and downs. Past returns don't predict future ones, which is why the calculator treats the return as your assumption.

Is NPS better than EPF or PPF?

They do different jobs. EPF and PPF give fixed, declared rates and a fully tax-free payout; NPS is market-linked and part of it must buy a taxable annuity. Kosh doesn't recommend products; compare the projections in each calculator.
