In the new regime there is no 80C, so all the interest is taxed at your slab. Declaring it every year spreads the tax out.

## How the NSC calculator works

The National Savings Certificate (VIII issue) runs for 5 years. Interest at 7.7% (October to December 2026) compounds yearly but is paid only at maturity, so INR 1,000 grows to about INR 1,449. The rate is fixed on the day you buy and doesn't change for that certificate.

Interest is taxable, at your slab rate. The quirk is that each year's interest is 'deemed reinvested' in the certificate. In the old regime, the interest for years 1 to 4 can be claimed under 80C along with the original deposit, so it effectively cancels out. Only the 5th year's interest is fully taxed.

In the new regime there's no 80C, so all the interest is taxed. You can declare it each year as it accrues, which spreads the tax, or declare it all in the year of maturity. The calculator shows the total tax on interest over 5 years at the slab you choose.

There's no upper limit on how much you can invest. The minimum is INR 1,000, in multiples of INR 100. There's no TDS on NSC, so remember to report the interest yourself.

Maturity = deposit x (1 + 7.7%)⁵

Old regime

deposit + interest of years 1-4 qualify for 80C

## Worked example: Deepak uses NSC to fill his 80C

Deepak, a pharmacist in Kanpur who files under the old regime, has INR 50,000 of 80C room left after his EPF. He buys an NSC for INR 50,000. It matures at INR 72,452 after 5 years. Of the INR 22,452 interest, INR 17,272 earned in years 1 to 4 can be claimed under 80C as reinvested, so only the 5th year's INR 5,180 is fully taxed: about INR 1,077 at his 20% slab with cess.

Post-tax maturity**INR 71,374**

In the old regime the INR 50,000 deposit and INR 17,272 of reinvested interest (years 1 to 4) count toward 80C, within the INR 1.5 lakh cap. Only the last year's interest is fully taxed.

## Good to know

- Premature encashment is allowed only on the holder's death, by court order or when pledged and forfeited.
- NSC can be pledged as collateral for loans at most banks.
- Interest deemed reinvested counts for 80C only within the overall INR 1.5 lakh cap shared with EPF, PPF, ELSS and others.
- NSCs can be held in your name, jointly, or for a minor. They are issued as e-certificates through the post office.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the NSC interest rate in 2026?

7.7% a year, compounded annually, for certificates bought between October and December 2026. The rate on your certificate stays fixed for the full 5 years.

How much will INR 1 lakh in NSC become after 5 years?

About INR 1,44,903 at 7.7%. Interest is not paid out yearly; it is added to the certificate and paid with the principal at maturity.

Is NSC interest taxable?

Yes, at your slab rate. In the old regime, interest for the first four years is treated as reinvested and qualifies for 80C, which offsets most of the tax. In the new regime it is fully taxable.

Is there TDS on NSC?

No. The post office doesn't deduct TDS on NSC interest. You must report the accrued interest in your return yourself.
