## How the post office RD calculator works

A post office RD runs for 5 years (60 monthly instalments) with a minimum of INR 100 a month and no maximum. The rate, 6.7% for October to December 2026, is fixed for the full term on the day you open the account.

Interest compounds every quarter. Each instalment earns interest from the month it's paid until maturity, so the first instalment earns for 60 months and the last for one. The calculator adds up each instalment's quarterly-compounded value, the same method the post office uses for its maturity tables. INR 5,000 a month grows to about INR 3,56,829.

You can extend the RD for another 5 years at maturity, at the rate applicable when it was opened, and keep depositing. Choose 10 years to see that.

RD interest is taxable at your slab. There's no 80C benefit. The post office deducts TDS under the same rules as banks if your interest crosses the threshold.

Maturity = Σ monthly x (1 + 6.7% / 4)^(months left / 3)

## Good to know

- Pay by the 15th if the account was opened between the 1st and 15th, or by month-end if opened later. Late payments attract a fee of INR 1 for every INR 100 per month.
- After 12 instalments you can take a loan of up to 50% of the balance, at 2% above the RD rate.
- Paying 6 months or more in advance earns a small rebate on the instalments.
- Four consecutive missed instalments discontinue the account; it can be revived within the next two months.

## Frequently asked questions
