## How the post office FD calculator works

A post office time deposit (TD) is the post office's fixed deposit. Rates for October to December 2026 are 6.9% for 1 year, 7.0% for 2 years, 7.1% for 3 years and 7.5% for 5 years, locked for the term on the day you invest.

Interest is calculated quarterly but paid out once a year. So the yearly payout is deposit x ((1 + rate / 4)⁴ − 1), slightly more than the headline rate: INR 10,000 at 6.9% pays INR 708 a year. Interest that's paid out doesn't compound further unless you reinvest it.

The minimum deposit is INR 1,000, in multiples of INR 100, with no upper limit. The table shows your yearly interest at every tenure so you can compare them side by side.

Only the 5-year TD qualifies for 80C, in the old regime. Interest on all tenures is taxable at your slab, and TDS applies above INR 50,000 of interest a year (INR 1 lakh for seniors).

Yearly interest = deposit x ((1 + rate / 400)⁴ − 1)

## Worked example: Imran parks INR 3 lakh for 2 years

Imran, an engineer in Gurugram, has INR 3 lakh set aside for a home renovation in two years. He opens a 2-year post office TD at 7.0%. He receives INR 21,558 each year, INR 43,115 in total. At his 30% slab, tax takes about INR 6,726 a year from that interest.

Total interest

INR 43,115

INR 21,558 paid every year for 2 years at 7%

Effective yearly yield**7.19%**

Total payout**INR 3,43,115**

Tax a year at your slab**INR 6,726**

Deposit **INR 3,00,000**Interest **INR 43,115**

Only the 5-year TD qualifies for 80C. Interest is taxed at your slab in the year it's paid or accrues.

## Good to know

- Premature withdrawal is allowed after 6 months. Before 1 year, you get the savings account rate; after that, the rate for the completed tenure minus 2%.
- 5-year TDs used for 80C can't be withdrawn early in a way that keeps the deduction. Plan for the full term.
- You can have the yearly interest credited automatically into a post office RD.
- Deposits are backed by the Government of India, so there's no deposit-insurance cap as with banks.

## Frequently asked questions

What are post office FD rates for October to December 2026?

6.9% for 1 year, 7.0% for 2 years, 7.1% for 3 years and 7.5% for 5 years. Interest is compounded quarterly and paid annually.

How much interest will I get on INR 1 lakh in a 5-year post office FD?

About INR 7,714 a year at 7.5%, or roughly INR 38,568 over 5 years if you take the interest out each year.

Is post office FD better than a bank FD?

It depends on the rates on offer and your needs. Post office TDs are government-backed and the 5-year TD qualifies for 80C. Bank FDs offer more tenure choices and sometimes higher rates for seniors. Compare the post-tax yield for your slab.

Is TDS deducted on post office FD?

Yes, once your interest from the post office exceeds INR 50,000 in a year (INR 1 lakh for seniors). Submit Form 15G or 15H if your tax will be nil.
