## How the PPF calculator works

PPF interest is set by the government every quarter; it is 7.1% for October to December 2026. Interest is calculated each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, and credited once a year on 31 March. In effect it compounds yearly.

Timing matters. Money deposited by 5 April earns interest for all 12 months of that year. Money deposited in March earns nothing that year. The calculator lets you compare both: on INR 1.5 lakh a year, depositing late costs more than INR 1.5 lakh in lost interest over 15 years.

You can deposit between INR 500 and INR 1.5 lakh a year, in up to 12 instalments. The account matures after 15 full financial years from the end of the year you opened it. You can then extend it in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits; the calculator assumes you keep depositing.

PPF is exempt at all three stages: deposits qualify for 80C in the old regime, interest is tax-free, and the maturity amount is tax-free. In the new regime the 80C benefit is gone, but tax-free interest and maturity still apply.

## Worked example: Anil puts INR 1 lakh a year in PPF for 20 years

Anil, 32, a government school teacher in Nagpur, deposits INR 1 lakh every April and plans to extend his PPF once by 5 years. Over 20 years he puts in INR 20 lakh. At 7.1%, his account grows to about INR 44.39 lakh, of which INR 24.39 lakh is tax-free interest. If the rate changes in later quarters, so will this figure.

## Good to know

- Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year, up to 50% of an earlier balance. Loans against PPF are available from year 3 to year 6.
- The INR 1.5 lakh limit covers your own account plus any account you hold for a minor child. Deposits above it earn no interest.
- Deposit at least INR 500 every year, or the account becomes inactive and needs a INR 50-a-year penalty to revive.
- One person can have only one PPF account. NRIs can't open a new one, but an existing account can run to maturity.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the PPF interest rate for October to December 2026?

7.1% a year, compounded annually. The government reviews small-savings rates every quarter; the PPF rate has stayed at 7.1% for several quarters.

How much will I get if I invest INR 1.5 lakh a year in PPF for 15 years?

About INR 40.68 lakh at 7.1%, if you deposit by 5 April each year. You'd have put in INR 22.5 lakh, so about INR 18.18 lakh is tax-free interest. Depositing late in the year lowers this.

Is PPF interest taxable?

No. PPF interest and the maturity amount are fully tax-free under both regimes. Deposits get the 80C deduction only in the old regime.

Can I extend my PPF account after 15 years?

Yes, in blocks of 5 years, as many times as you like. To keep depositing, submit the extension form within one year of maturity. Without it, the account still earns interest but takes no fresh deposits.

Can I close my PPF account early?

Only after 5 complete years, and only for specific reasons such as serious illness, higher education or a change in residency status. Premature closure reduces the interest by 1% for the whole period.
