## How the SCSS calculator works

SCSS is a 5-year deposit for people aged 60 and above, retirees aged 55 to 60 who invest within a month of receiving retirement benefits, and retired defence personnel from 50. You can invest up to INR 30 lakh per person, in multiples of INR 1,000.

Interest at 8.2% (October to December 2026) is paid every quarter on the first working day of April, July, October and January. Each payout is deposit x 8.2% / 4, so INR 30 lakh pays INR 61,500 a quarter. The rate is fixed for 5 years from the day you invest.

Interest is taxable at your slab. TDS of 10% applies if your SCSS interest exceeds INR 1 lakh in a year, unless you submit Form 15H because your tax is nil. In the old regime, the deposit qualifies for 80C in the year you invest, and 80TTB lets seniors deduct up to INR 50,000 of deposit interest.

After 5 years you can extend once by 3 years, at the rate in force on the date of maturity. The calculator shows your yearly interest after tax at the slab you choose.

Quarterly interest = deposit x 8.2% / 4

Limit

INR 30 lakh per person

## Worked example: A retired teacher invests INR 20 lakh

Mrs D'Souza, a retired teacher in Goa who files under the old regime, invests INR 20 lakh of her gratuity and PF in SCSS. She receives INR 41,000 every quarter, INR 1,64,000 a year. As that's above INR 1 lakh, the post office deducts INR 16,400 TDS. At her 10% slab, tax on the interest is about INR 17,056 a year, and she saves about INR 15,600 once by claiming INR 1.5 lakh of the deposit under 80C.

## Good to know

- Premature closure: 1.5% of the deposit is deducted before 2 years, and 1% between 2 and 5 years. Closing within a year means interest paid is recovered.
- Interest that isn't withdrawn doesn't earn more interest. Link the account to a savings account for auto-credit.
- A couple can each invest INR 30 lakh in their own accounts, or hold a joint account with the spouse, where the deposit counts toward the first holder's limit.
- Retirees aged 55 to 60 must invest within one month of receiving retirement benefits, and only up to the amount of those benefits.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the SCSS interest rate for October to December 2026?

8.2% a year, paid quarterly. The rate on your account stays fixed for 5 years from the date of deposit.

How much interest will I get on INR 30 lakh in SCSS?

INR 61,500 a quarter, or INR 2,46,000 a year at 8.2%. Over 5 years that's INR 12.3 lakh in interest, with the INR 30 lakh returned at maturity.

Is SCSS interest taxable?

Yes, at your slab rate. TDS of 10% is deducted if interest exceeds INR 1 lakh a year. In the old regime you can claim up to INR 50,000 of deposit interest under 80TTB.

Can I invest in SCSS in the new tax regime?

Yes. The scheme is open to all eligible seniors. You simply don't get the 80C deduction on the deposit or the 80TTB deduction on interest; the new regime's lower rates and INR 12 lakh rebate may still leave your tax at nil.
