## How the 80C calculator works

Section 80C (section 123 in the Income-tax Act, 2025) lets old-regime taxpayers deduct up to INR 1.5 lakh a year for specific investments and payments. Many people are closer to the limit than they think, because their EPF contribution counts automatically.

Enter each item: your share of EPF and any VPF, PPF deposits, ELSS mutual funds, life insurance premiums, home-loan principal repaid, tuition fees for up to two children, and others such as NSC, Sukanya Samriddhi deposits and 5-year tax-saver FDs. The calculator adds them up and caps the total at INR 1.5 lakh.

The tax saved is the deduction times your highest slab rate plus 4% cess. Anything above INR 1.5 lakh doesn't reduce your tax, although the investment itself may still be worthwhile.

Tax saved = min(total 80C, INR 1,50,000) x slab rate x 1.04

## Worked example: Karan, EPF plus a small ELSS SIP

Karan's EPF deduction is INR 7,200 a month, INR 86,400 a year. He also runs a INR 2,000 ELSS SIP and pays INR 18,000 for a life policy. That's INR 1,28,400 of 80C, saving about INR 26,707 at his 20% slab. He has INR 21,600 of room left, worth about INR 4,493 more in tax saved if he invests it before 31 March.

## Good to know

- 80C is an old-regime deduction. If you're in the new regime, these investments don't reduce your tax.
- Count EPF first: it's deducted from salary and often fills half the limit on its own.
- Only the principal part of your home-loan EMI counts, plus stamp duty and registration in the year of purchase.
- Lock-ins vary: ELSS 3 years, tax-saver FD 5 years, NSC 5 years, PPF 15 years.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the 80C limit for FY 2026-27?

INR 1.5 lakh a year, unchanged since 2014. The INR 50,000 under 80CCD(1B) for your own NPS is a separate, additional limit.

Is EPF part of 80C?

Yes. Your own 12% contribution and any voluntary PF count toward the INR 1.5 lakh. Your employer's contribution doesn't.

Does term insurance premium count under 80C?

Yes, premiums for life cover on yourself, your spouse or children count, up to 10% of the sum assured for policies issued after April 2012.

Can I claim 80C in the new tax regime?

No. The new regime doesn't allow 80C, 80D, HRA or most other deductions. Compare both regimes before you invest purely to save tax.
