## How the 80D calculator works

Section 80D (section 126 in the new Act) has two separate buckets. The first covers premiums for yourself, your spouse and dependent children: up to INR 25,000, or INR 50,000 if you or your spouse is 60 or older. The second covers your parents: up to INR 25,000, or INR 50,000 if either parent is a senior citizen.

Within those limits you can also claim up to INR 5,000 a year in total for preventive health check-ups, and this is the only part you can pay in cash. For senior citizens without any health insurance, actual medical bills can be claimed instead of premiums, inside the same INR 50,000 limit.

The calculator caps each bucket, adds them, and multiplies by your slab rate plus cess to show the tax saved. The highest possible total is INR 1 lakh, when you and your parents are all seniors.

80D = min(self premium + check-up, INR 25K or INR 50K) + min(parents' premium + check-up, INR 25K or INR 50K)

## Worked example: Divya, her policy and her parents'

Divya, 34, pays INR 18,000 for a family floater and INR 3,000 for an annual check-up. She also pays INR 42,000 for her parents' policy; her father is 63. Her own bucket is INR 21,000 (limit INR 25,000) and her parents' is INR 42,000 (limit INR 50,000), for INR 63,000 in total, which saves about INR 19,656 at the 30% slab.

## Good to know

- Pay premiums by card, UPI, cheque or bank transfer: cash premiums aren't deductible.
- For multi-year policies paid upfront, you claim the premium proportionately each year.
- Premiums for in-laws, siblings or grandparents don't qualify.
- 80D is old-regime only, but health insurance is worth having whichever regime you pick.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum 80D deduction?

INR 1 lakh: INR 50,000 for yourself and family when you're 60 or older, plus INR 50,000 for senior-citizen parents. For most young families it's INR 25,000 plus INR 25,000 or INR 50,000 for parents.

Can I claim 80D for my parents if they are not dependent on me?

Yes. Parents don't need to be financially dependent; you just need to pay the premium yourself. If siblings split the premium, each can claim the part they paid.

Does the employer's group health cover count?

No, unless part of the premium is deducted from your salary. Only premiums you pay count for 80D.

Is GST on the health premium deductible?

Individual health and life insurance premiums have been exempt from GST since 22 September 2025, so recent premiums carry no GST. For older receipts, the full amount paid, including GST, counted.
