## How the STCG tax calculator works

Short-term capital gains (STCG) arise when you sell listed shares or equity mutual funds within 12 months of buying. If STT was paid, section 111A taxes the gain at a flat 20%, plus 4% cess, whatever your slab. For other assets sold early, such as gold within 24 months, the gain is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate.

The gain is your sale value minus purchase cost minus transfer costs: brokerage, exchange and SEBI fees, stamp duty and GST on those charges. Securities transaction tax is the one charge the law does not let you deduct.

Short-term capital losses are flexible. They can be set off against short-term or long-term gains in the same year, and any balance carried forward for 8 years, provided you file your return on time. Enter losses from this year or earlier years and the calculator nets them off first.

If your other income is below the basic exemption, the unused part reduces the taxable STCG. The 87A rebate, however, can't be used against 111A tax in the new regime, so even someone with income under INR 12 lakh pays 20% on equity STCG.

STCG tax = (sale − cost − charges − losses set off) x 20% x 1.04

## Worked example: Arjun, a swing trader with a INR 7 lakh salary

Arjun earns INR 7 lakh, well inside the new regime's tax-free limit. He sold shares for INR 4.2 lakh four months after buying them for INR 3.5 lakh, paying INR 1,200 in brokerage and charges, and has a INR 10,000 short-term loss from another trade. His net STCG is INR 58,800. The 87A rebate still covers his salary, but not this gain: he owes 20%, or INR 11,760, plus cess, for INR 12,230.

STCG tax

INR 12,230

20% under 111A + cess

## Good to know

- Intraday trading isn't STCG: it's speculative business income. Futures and options are non-speculative business income, taxed at slab rates and reported in ITR-3.
- The STCG rate on listed equity rose from 15% to 20% for sales on or after 23 July 2024.
- Waiting until the holding crosses 12 months can cut the rate from 20% to 12.5%, and the first INR 1.25 lakh of LTCG is tax-free.
- STCG on equity counts for advance tax. If it pushes your tax after TDS above INR 10,000, pay it in the next instalment to avoid interest.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the STCG tax rate on shares in FY 2026-27?

20% plus 4% cess on listed shares and equity mutual funds held for 12 months or less, where STT was paid. This rate applies to sales from 23 July 2024 onwards and was not changed in Budget 2026.

Is there any exemption on STCG like the INR 1.25 lakh for LTCG?

No. Short-term gains on equity get no yearly allowance. The only relief is for residents whose other income is below the basic exemption limit: the unused amount reduces the taxable STCG.

Can I set off STCG against a loss in F&O?

No. F&O losses are business losses and can be set off against other income except salary, but capital gains can only be reduced by capital losses. A short-term capital loss can, however, be set off against STCG or LTCG.

Is STCG added to my salary income?

It counts toward your total income, which decides your surcharge and whether you get the 87A rebate. But equity STCG is taxed separately at 20%, not at your slab. STCG on non-equity assets is taxed at slab rates.
