## How the step-up SIP calculator works

A step-up (or top-up) SIP increases the monthly amount once a year, usually by a percentage such as 10%. It mirrors how salaries rise: you start with what's comfortable now and invest more as you earn more, without having to start a fresh SIP each time.

The calculator runs month by month. For the first 12 months it invests your starting amount at the start of each month and grows the balance at your assumed monthly rate. At the start of year two the SIP rises by your step-up percentage, and so on until the last year.

Alongside, it works out a flat SIP of the same starting amount over the same period. The difference between the two is the extra corpus the step-up builds. Most of that gap comes from the larger instalments of the later years, so the step-up matters more the longer you stay invested.

The return is an assumption you control. A step-up only works if the higher instalments stay affordable, so set the percentage close to the raise you realistically expect, not the one you hope for.

Year k SIP = P x (1 + s)^(k − 1); each month: balance = (balance + SIP) x (1 + i)

P

s

yearly step-up as a decimal

i

monthly rate = yearly return / 12 / 100

## Worked example: Rohit, INR 15,000 rising 10% a year

Rohit, 29, an analyst in Hyderabad, starts a INR 15,000 SIP and raises it 10% every April after his appraisal. By year 20 he's investing INR 91,739 a month. Over the whole period he puts in about INR 1.03 crore, and at an assumed 12% the SIP could reach INR 2.98 crore. A flat INR 15,000 SIP would have reached about INR 1.5 crore on INR 36 lakh invested.

## Good to know

- Many fund houses let you add a top-up when you register the SIP, as a fixed rupee amount or a percentage, once or twice a year. If yours doesn't, you can start a second SIP each year instead.
- A 10% step-up roughly doubles the corpus of a 20-year SIP at a 12% assumed return. A 5% step-up still adds more than a third.
- Some top-up facilities have a cap on the maximum instalment. Check whether yours stops increasing after a set amount.
- If a year is tight, you can modify or cancel the top-up without stopping the base SIP.

## Frequently asked questions

What is a step-up SIP?

It's a SIP whose monthly amount rises automatically by a set percentage or amount every year. You start smaller and invest more as your income grows, which builds a much larger corpus than keeping the SIP flat.

What is a good step-up percentage?

A step-up close to your expected salary increase, often 5% to 10%, is easier to sustain than an ambitious number you'll later cancel. Even a small step-up makes a noticeable difference over 15 to 20 years.

Is a step-up SIP better than a normal SIP?

It isn't a different product, just a higher total investment spread differently. At the same assumed return it always ends with more money because you invest more. The real benefit is behavioural: it keeps your investing in step with your income.

Can I stop the step-up later?

Yes. You can usually cancel or change the top-up instruction through the fund house or the platform you invest with, and the SIP continues at its last amount.
