## How the sukanya Samriddhi Yojana calculator works

A parent or legal guardian can open an SSY account for a girl child below 10, with up to two accounts per family (more for twins or triplets). You deposit between INR 250 and INR 1.5 lakh each financial year, for 15 years from the date of opening.

Interest, 8.2% for October to December 2026, is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and month-end and credited each 31 March. The calculator assumes you deposit by 5 April each year so the full year earns interest.

After the 15th year you stop depositing, but the balance keeps earning interest until the account matures 21 years from opening. That six-year stretch with no deposits is where much of the growth happens, as the table shows.

SSY is fully tax-exempt: deposits qualify under 80C in the old regime, and interest and maturity are tax-free in both regimes. The rate can change every quarter, so treat the maturity figure as an illustration at today's rate.

## Worked example: Ritu opens an account for her 5-year-old

Ritu, a nurse in Bhopal, opens an SSY account in 2026 for her daughter, who is 5, and plans to deposit INR 5,000 a month (INR 60,000 a year) for 15 years. She'll put in INR 9 lakh in total. At 8.2%, the account matures in 2047, when her daughter is 26, at about INR 28.73 lakh. When her daughter turns 18, up to half the balance, about INR 7.07 lakh, can be withdrawn for higher education.

## Good to know

- Withdrawals of up to 50% of the previous year's balance are allowed after the girl turns 18 or passes Class 10, for education.
- The account can be closed early once she is 18 for her marriage (within a month before or three months after).
- Miss the INR 250 minimum in a year and the account is marked as defaulted. Revive it by paying INR 250 for each missed year plus a INR 50 penalty per year.
- Interest stops on the account at 21 years from opening even if you don't close it, so plan to withdraw at maturity.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana interest rate now?

8.2% a year for October to December 2026, compounded annually. The rate is reviewed every quarter and applies to the whole balance, so it can change over the life of the account.

How much will I get if I deposit INR 1.5 lakh a year in SSY?

At 8.2% throughout, INR 1.5 lakh a year for 15 years (INR 22.5 lakh in total) grows to roughly INR 71.8 lakh at 21 years. Enter your own amount above to see the year-by-year table.

Till what age can I open an SSY account?

Before the girl's 10th birthday. The account can be opened at any post office or authorised bank with her birth certificate and the parent's KYC.

Is SSY maturity amount taxable?

No. Interest and the maturity amount are tax-free under both regimes. Deposits get the 80C deduction of up to INR 1.5 lakh only if you file under the old regime.

Can I deposit after 15 years in SSY?

No. Deposits are allowed only for the first 15 years from opening. The balance then earns interest without deposits until maturity at 21 years.
