## How the TDS on salary calculator works

Employers deduct tax from salary under what used to be section 192. They estimate your income tax for the full year, using the regime you've chosen and the deductions you've declared, subtract what they've already deducted, and spread the rest evenly over the months left.

That's why TDS changes mid-year. A raise in October means the extra annual tax is squeezed into fewer months, and investment proofs submitted in January (or not submitted at all) reset the estimate for the last quarter.

Enter your annual salary, regime, the months left including this one, and TDS already deducted. In the old regime, add the deductions you've declared to your employer. The calculator shows the tax for the year and the monthly deduction from here on.

## Worked example: Ishaan, a raise in July

After a raise in July, Ishaan's salary for the year works out to INR 22 lakh. His tax for the year in the new regime is INR 2,40,500. INR 45,000 was deducted from April to June, so the remaining INR 1,95,500 is spread over nine months: about INR 21,722 a month.

## Good to know

- Tell your employer about income from a previous job in the same year (Form 12B) so TDS isn't short; otherwise you'll owe the balance when filing.
- You can also declare other income, like interest, to your employer so it's taxed through TDS rather than advance tax.
- Your Form 16 summarises the year's salary TDS, and Form 26AS or the AIS shows what was deposited against your PAN.

## Frequently asked questions

How is TDS on salary calculated?

Your employer estimates your total taxable salary for the year, computes the tax under your chosen regime, and divides it by the number of salary payments left in the year, after subtracting tax already deducted.

Why did my TDS increase in January?

Usually because investment proofs weren't submitted or were lower than declared, so your employer removed those deductions and recovered the extra tax in the last three months.

What if my employer deducted too much TDS?

File your ITR and claim the excess as a refund. It comes back to your bank account, with interest of 0.5% a month in most cases.

Does TDS on salary apply if my income is below INR 12 lakh?

In the new regime, if your estimated taxable income is INR 12 lakh or less, the rebate makes your tax nil and no TDS should be deducted.
