## How the TFSA contribution room calculator works

You start earning TFSA room in the year you turn 18 (or 2009, when TFSAs began, or the year you became a Canadian resident, whichever is latest). Each year adds that year's limit, $7,000 for 2026, and unused room carries forward forever.

Contributions use up room. Withdrawals don't give it back right away: the amount is added to your room on January 1 of the next year.

The table lists every annual limit that counts for you, with the running total, so you can check the figure against CRA My Account.

Room = sum of annual limits since eligible − total contributions + withdrawals before this year

## Worked example: Chloé, born in 1995

Chloé turned 18 in 2013, so limits from 2013 to 2026 add up to $89,000. She has contributed $40,000 and withdrew $5,000 in an earlier year, which came back as room. She can contribute $54,000 in 2026.

## Good to know

- Someone who was 18 or older and a resident in 2009 has $109,000 of total room in 2026 if they've never contributed.
- Over-contributing costs 1% a month on the highest excess amount until it's withdrawn.
- Re-contributing a withdrawal in the same year uses new room; wait until January 1 if you don't have spare room.
- CRA My Account can lag recent transactions, so keep your own record.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the TFSA limit for 2026?

$7,000. Unused room from earlier years carries forward, so your total room may be much higher.

When does a TFSA withdrawal give me room back?

On January 1 of the year after you withdraw. Withdraw $5,000 in 2026 and that $5,000 is added to your room in 2027.

Do investment gains use up TFSA room?

No. Room is based on contributions and withdrawals, not on how the investments do. Growth inside the account doesn't count against your limit.
